Join the Natural Health Movement, navigating the twists and turns of the backstories of today’s ever-popular natural products and natural places. This natural-health movement in the 20th century pushed the boundaries of accepted norms in industrial food and industrial lifestyles. Follow the trail of this detective story that starts about 1910, as we discover the surprising beginnings and amazing development of today’s “natural supermarkets”, “organic” produce, herbal medicine and thousands of other things we now take for granted as shoppers in the 21st-century.

Each chapter of the series In Search of our Natural Roots, will feature a favorite natural product or place and then guide viewers through the decades-long story of the wholistic game-changers of the natural-health movement. These pioneers rejected the industrialization of North America's food systems, questioning the “better things, and better living through chemistry” model. Early trailblazers inspired surprising developments that eventually led the boomer generation to rediscover natural foods, herbal medicine, and rekindling of their love for and connection to the natural world itself.

The natural-health movement challenged big money and long odds, inspiring today’s generation of gatekeepers to push the envelopes of healthful living and healthful foods. If you take a vitamin, eat organic foods, and or have a shelf of herbs, you’re living proof that they succeeded!

Main Stories We Are Following

  • PRELUDE:  The Fall and Rise of the Natural-Health Movement
The fascinating story of the Fall and Rise of natural health started over 100 years ago. It started with the 20th-century populations moving from farms to cities. This concentration spurred the industrialization of the food supply moving North Americans from Farm Fresh to “dinner in a can”, and from “TV Dinners” to frequent Fast Food, and progressively degrading our health as a result. Coinciding with the fall of fresh foods, turn-of-the-century denunciations of traditional healing concepts and methods dominated medical thinking and resulted in ignorance of natural approaches to health. This Fall from natural-food and natural health was first embraced—then questioned, and by the end of the century— dethroned, through the influence of the natural-health movement. In the 21st century, North Americans now enjoy the rise and renaissance of natural medicine and they savor an eclectic buffet of alternative health choices. But how did the natural-health movement influence the rise of natural food and natural health?
  • The Super NATURAL grocery store
How natural food stores got super-sized and became centers for gourmets.
  • Herbs — Journey from seasoning to Medicine
How "return to the land movements" and major media coverage of herbs like St. John’s Wort and celebrity author-practitioners like Dr. Andrew Weil M.D. sparked the paradigm shift that moved herbs from the pantry to the medicine chest.
  • Who needs Vitamins?
How Vitamins and minerals became daily essentials for millions of conscious consumers.
  • What’s “ORGANIC”?
How J.I. RodaleRachel Carlson and the "Alar Scare” blew the whistle on pesticide contaminants in our food supply
  • Designer “genes” and not found at The Gap
How plant geneticists made GMO a "four-letter
word" and how that led to a new ‘Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval’.
  • Let’s CO-operate
How a few simple “food buying clubs” became a source for abundant food choices and a force for change.
  • When Hippie food became “hip”
How counter-culture revolutionaries transformed North America's “Wonder Bread and Velveeta” tastes in food and diversified its food culture—anyone for humus and quinoa chips?
  • Fitness "Freak-out”
From televised Jack LaLanne shows to Nike-clad Joggers, to hot Yoga— Exercise has been transformed from fitness crazes to a daily ritual for several generations.
  • "Take 2 birch barks and call me in the morning”
How the art of natural medicine became infused with science through standardized-educational curriculums at institutions such as Bastyr University.
  • Natural products Get Personal
From Bronner’s Castile Soap to Tom’s of Main Toothpaste to Essential Oils selling at $400 a pound, personal care has become NATURAL care.
